Now What? – The Day New America Was Born

New America Was Born

Okay. The history has been made. The changes are palpable, and we won’t ever be the same as a country.

First things first: it was a big night for cannabis. Activists, business, patients and recreational customers – all won the battle against prohibition and criminalization. Five states decided on adult-use legalization and four, except Arizona, approved the ballots. Skeptics fell flat; Americans has spoken.

And they have spoken big.

These states approved recreational cannabis:

  • California, with 39 million people, said yes to Prop 64.
  • Massachusetts, with 7 million people, said yes to Question 4.
  • Nevada, with 3 million people, said yes to Question 2.
  • Maine, with 1 million people, said yes to Question 1.

These states approved medical marijuana:

  • Florida, with 20 million people, said yes to Amendment 2.
  • Arkansas, with 3 million people, said yes to Issue 6.
  • Montana, with 1 million people, said yes to Initiative 182.
  • North Dakota, with 750 000  people, said yes to Measure 5.

It makes almost 75 million people. Repeat: 75 million people said yes to cannabis use. It means that one in five Americans now has potential access to cannabis where it’s legal for adult use. 1/5 of the nation has supported cannabis throughout the country, and who knows, probably, the next big step on a federal level is coming.

See for yourself: most states already handle cannabis legislation themselves. They leave it to counties and communities to decide whether they want cannabis to be marketed and used locally.

However, with a new president comes uncertainty. New challenges are ahead of us and the world. Many issues would probably need more attention and civil activism. The future of cannabis, even after such approval, remains not guaranteed.

Hard work is ahead of us. Passing the ballot is just the beginning of a long road to discussions, building businesses, and ensuring fair policies and freedom to use. The real work starts today, and it starts with you. Let’s do it together.

Congratulations, America. You deserve your cannabis, and you got it. Hope it will bring your much-needed joy and relief in the future.
