Polls: 62% of Americans Support Legalization

The legalization of cannabis is a hot topic, and opinions vary wildly, depends on who you ask. However, all groups, including seniors and Republicans, seem to turn their opinions in favor of legal marijuana.

On Monday, Pew Research Center published results that show that 62% of US citizens believe that cannabis should be legal. The study surveyed 1,754 adults, and the outcome suggests the highest percentage of support ever reported.

Surprising Support from Republicans

According to persistent trends, the survey found that support for legal cannabis is prevailing among Democrats: 69% vs. 45% of Republicans. However, there is some growth of pro-weed attitude in Republicans as well. One of the reason can be a subtle message given by individual members of GOP. For example, in Oklahoma, Republicans have helped to battle restrictions banning the sale of smokable flower in dispensaries. Moreover, in Texas, Republican delegates approved a platform that supports the removal of jail time for small possessions.

Independents Show Strongest Support

The most active support, however, comes from those with independent affiliation. The survey shows that 59% of Republican-leaning independents express support of legal cannabis, and 75% of Democrat-leaning independents respond with confidence that it’s time to end the war on marijuana.

There are some changes in opinion within generations: 39% seniors between the ages of 76 and 93 expressed a positive attitude to legalization. The younger the generation, the more likely it to support legalization. Consistent with this view, 54% of Baby Boomers, 63% of Generation X, and 74% of millennials pronounced their support for legal cannabis.

It seems like supermajority of Americans comes to support growing legalization efforts despite recent government attempts to conduct a propaganda attack on cannabis advocates and flower itself. Let’s see how it will turn out when even Republicans are jumping on board of the legalization.
